Statement by the St Christopher National on the Restoration of the Old Treasury Building

(Basseterre, St. Kitts – July 9*, 2026) The SCNT appreciates the continued interest and patience of the public in the restoration of the Historic OTB, which serves as The National Museum. We recognise the national importance of this project and share the public’s eagerness to see it completed, along with their concern for safe pedestrian access to the surrounding areas.
While we understand the desire for regular updates, the project is governed by contractual and legal frameworks that limit the level of detail we can disclose. What we can assure the public is that the restoration remains a priority, with funding provided by the Government and execution supported by our partners, including Parvenir of Trinidad.
The project, first initiated in 2020, has faced challenges that required careful review and renewed oversight. Since recommencing in 2025, the SCNT has remained actively engaged in monitoring progress and addressing issues as they arise. Recently, the Board appointed a dedicated subcommittee to work closely with the Architects and Project Managers, alongside Restoration Specialist Engineer Danielle Steele of Trinidad & Tobago. We continue to receive strong support from the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Department of Public Works, and the Office of the Honourable Prime Minister.
Although the original completion target of June 2026 has not been met, the SCNT is working closely with the relevant authorities and is exploring all legal options to determine the appropriate way forward. Our commitment is to ensure that all actions taken are consistent with contractual obligations and the law, while safeguarding the integrity of this important national project.
With the OTB currently closed, the SCNT is operating from a temporary office at the National Heroes Park. While opportunities for public engagement are more limited, we remain dedicated to prudent stewardship of our resources and to finding meaningful ways to connect with the community.
The restoration of the OTB is more than a construction project—it is an investment in preserving our national heritage for future generations. We thank the public for their continued patience, understanding, and support as we work diligently toward a successful conclusion.
